ACTON WOMAN’S CLUB 2007-2008 PROGRAMS

 

September 12,2007- SUSAN  B. ANTHONY BY SALLY MATSON. Using Susan B. Anthony’s own words- her fiery speeches, humorous letters and revealing diary entries, Sally has woven together a story filled with wit and emotion.

 

October 10, 2007- THE JOYS OF LISTENING- RICHARD PITTMAN (CONDUCTOR) AND JAN MULLER-SZERAWA (CELLIST). Mr. Pittman is Music Director of Boston Musica Viva and a frequent guest conductor of the BBC, music director of the N.E. Philharmonic in Boston. He will be talking about the joys and significance of being a listener to classical music. Mr. Muller-Szeraws has performed all over the world. He will play excerpts from the Shostakovich 1st concerto and additional pieces by Back and Golijov.

 

November 14,2007- CRIMINAL & FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGIST AND NOVELIST PHILIP LUBER,Ph.D. An Acton resident, Dr. Luber is a practicing criminal and forensic psychologist who has used his experience as the basis for five published thrillers. He will entertain us by enabling us to see those that have acted out evil thoughts and great ills and the links and differences to us. He will then present how he has translated this into his many novels.

 

December 6, 2007- COOKIE FEAST—Holiday music by local harpist, Rebecca Sweet, 1:15 – 1:45 p.m. Enjoy the decorated Clubhouse, some tea and helping to pack the home-made cookies for the shut-ins.

 

December 12, 2007 – HOLIDAY LUNCHEON at  NASHAWTUC COUNTRY CLUB, Concord, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Reservations to be made with Hospitality  Committee at Oct. & Nov. mtgs.

 

January 9, 2008- 30 YEARS AGO; THE BLIZZARD OF ’78- Michael Tougias, author of the Blizzard of ’78 (and 15 other books) combines a unique array of photographs with riveting narration, bringing the Blizzard to life again. On Feb. 6 and 7, 1978 New England was knocked to its knees by incredible snow and wind referred to as the WORST STORM OF THE CENTRY. An in-depth analysis comparing this blizzard to the GREAT BLIZZARD of 1888 is also included.

 

February 13,2008- THE OTHER APRIL 19th – Dennis Ahern gives us another history lesson about the Acton militia and the little known  facts about Acton and the Civil War. Many will remember him when he last spoke to the Woman’s Club a few years ago about Caroline Lamson Brown and the Titanic.

 

March 12,2008 – IRVING BERLIN, HE ‘IS’ AMERICAN MUSIC. Jack Craig entertains us from the keyboard, leading us in song with a few of the 300 songs created by Irving Berlin. Mr. Berlin did this without learning to read or write music. Mr. Craig will trace Mr. Berlin’s rise, work with legendary performers and the musical spell he cast over America.

 

April 9, 2008 – TO THE LAST SALUTE -  Elizabeth Campbell Peters, a granddaughter of Georg von Trapp will lecture on her book, TO THE LAST SALUTE. The Sound of Music endeared Georg von Trapp and his singing family to the world and it also showed how desperately the Nazis wanted Capt. vonTrapp  for their navy. In her translation of his journals we learn why. vonTrapp’s own story of his exploits is exciting and instructive. It offers a rare combination of human interest, historical insight, and true life and death adventure.

 

May 21, 2008 – ANNUAL LUNCHEON & INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS.
